More adventures of the young and reckless
Well as the saying goes"Time Flys". My family had been on the Island for a year. So much and so many things had happened. It was kinda like a dream.
Me and Danny Williams hung out together most of the time. Usually with our little brothers and Ronnie White tagging along. Seemed as though everyday was a new adventure. We hiked, we played soldier and spent a lot of time around or in the Ocean.
Dan and me were always open to picking up a little spare change. It was usually more for fun than profit. I figure that here some sixty years later, it was good experience. We learn a lot about work "ethic" and attitude in general.
One fine California day Dan and me set-off to town and to Hector's place to do our paddle boat thing. Our little brothers and Ron White decided to stay at the Davis house with Raymond and watch the old "One Eyed"monster. As for me, I thought it was a waste of a perfectly good day. But then again, When everyday is a good day I don't guess it really matters. The neat thing was that Hector paid two as much as he paid four to take the little boats out.
I tied Dobe up so he wouldn't follow us. We decided to take the old "ugly" bike so we could get around faster. Dan and me had two job's that day. First Hector's restaurant and then to the Hanson Abalone packing place to build some small shipping boxes. Al paid us ten cents for each box we built. It was "easy" money.
I rolled up my right pant leg and with Dan on board us and that old bike hit the road. Out passed the "Sneaky Snakes" haunt, passed the Eagles nest and finally to Hector's place. After leaning the bike up against the board walk railing( the old bike didn't have a kickstand to go along with the chain guard it didn't have)we went inside the restaurant. I loved the smell of that place. I could have stayed there all day. No such luck. Hector lead us out to the boat dock and handed us our life jackets. Hector was heavy on safety plus he said the jackets had cost to much not to use. As always he asked us what we wanted for lunch. Hector always fed us after the boat job. We always ate the same thing. Tuna Fish sandwich. A sandwich unlike any other in this world.
Danny and me cast off and head out to meet the steamship. Picture if you will two kids in big orange life jackets that made us look like a couple of giant "Tootsie Pops". Now picture these two bright orange creature bobbing along in a "Shocking Pink" little toy boat. No doubt about it, we stood out.
We both peddled and I steered. Danny was occupied looking at some things that had been in an old Navy surplus pouch he'd brought with him. Danny was a "Pack Rat" of sorts. Always looking in garbage can's and dragging up junk from everywhere. A habit by the way that would in time cause us grief. Anyway, the old pouch contained some odds and ends. A fishing line and hook's, a small three pronged spear head minus any handle and badly faded wax paper packet of unknown contents. Danny folded the flap back on the packet. the stuff inside looked like "Kool Aid". He tasted a little pinch and pronounced it sure as hell weren't what it looked like and pitch the packet into the ocean.
We were now in position between the beach diving barge and the steamship pier. We peddled along real slow so all the tourist could see little pink boat as they came a shore. The people were all waving and pointing in our direction for some reason. We finished our run and headed back the way we came. We went back past the diving barge and noticed that everyone was diving off and heading into shore. Strange!!
I got us in close to the dock at Hectors so Dan could jump off and tie-up the boat. Our lunch was waiting for us at a table on the outdoor dining deck. Like I said earlier Hectors "Sea Food Grotto" had a Tuna Fish sandwich like no other. This thing was made from fresh Tuna or Albacore that had been broiled. It was served on a split and toasted loaf of French bread, tomato, lettuce and a home made lemon and butter sauce. Was it good? As my aunt Verda would say, " It was so good that if you placed on top of your head, your tongue would beat your brain's out trying to get to it"! It was indeed that good.
Hector stood at the deck railing looking out across the harbor. He motioned for me and Dan to come over to where he was. He said "My thats really strange" and pointed off toward the beach. What we saw was a yellow ocean instead of the normal blue green water of the Pacific. The sickly yellow color pretty much covered all the bay as far as the eye could see. All the swimmers had got out of the water and were lining the beach well back from the in coming waves. Oh Oh I wonder if? I took a closer look at Danny and could see the same yellow color on his lower lip. A good time to head for Pebbly beach I decided. While Hector was distracted, Dan and me mumbled Bye and "Beat it".
We later learned that some good for nothing prankster had dumped a phosphorescent yellow marker dye in the bay. It was the same stuff that downed military pilots used to attract rescue aircraft in the open sea. It was part of a survival kit that also included fishing line and hooks. The dye would cover about five square miles. It was harmless except for giving the impression that "Someone had peed in the pool".
Well me and old buddy Dan figured we'd once again cheated fate and got clean away. That feeling lasted just long enough for us to realize that Dan had left the pouch in the boat. Oops! Dan said we better go back for that pouch. To underscore the peril of our dilemma he also mention we'd go to prison and our folks would kill us. Made prefect sense to me so we "Wheeled" the old bike around and headed back to Hectors place.
This was just not to be our day. When we got back to the restaurant all the paddle boats including the "Shocking Pink" were out in the bay. I guess curiosity made the tourist want to get a better look at the yellow ocean. Man I could almost hear them jail doors slamming shut forever. Hector met us a the door. His first words was " I been expecting you guy's". Talk about losing bladder control, I came awful close. He grinned real big and said "You forgot your pay". He gave us each three dollars saying it was "Bonus Day". Then with a wink he said "That yellow water was a blessing" it had caused a lunch time rush at the restaurant. I admit, the place was packed. Hector told us"Boys, if I can get em for lunch they'll be back for dinner". We thanked him for the lunch and the generous pay and started to leave. We figured we'd maybe get away after all. Well yes and no. We were at the door when he said hold on guy's. Hector handed me a small brown paper bag, winked at us and said "See ya later boy's". We got on the bike and I peddled like "Hell" until we reached the end of the boardwalk. Once we were well away from anyone we stopped and looked in the paper bag. Low and behold, it was the old pouch that Dan had left in the "Shocking Pink" paddle boat. Mr. Hector had taken care of his boy's. All this and it wasn't even noon yet.

I’m impressed, I have to say. Really hardly ever do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me inform you, you have got hit the nail on the head. Your idea is excellent; the difficulty is one thing that not sufficient individuals are talking intelligently about. I'm very joyful that I stumbled across this in my seek for one thing referring to this. .
